A recent study that appeared in the journal JAMA Psychiatry on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 and reported by the MIT Technology Review found that teens spending more than three hours a day on social media are at higher risk of developing mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, aggression as well as antisocial behavior.

A study carried out in the youngest

The study was carried out with 6,600 young Americans aged between 12 and 15 years. They were asked how much time they spend on social media daily and whether or not they are experiencing mental health issues.

The results of the study found that the participants who spent the most time on social platforms were the most likely to develop mental health problems, even taking their background into account.

The study authors said that social networks both affected the mental health of adolescents by causing them problems like depression and anxiety; and their external behavior since they were more prone to antisocial or aggressive behavior. However, teens who reported not using social media or spending the least amount of time on social media were not at all prone to these antisocial behaviors.

Results to be taken with caution

Researchers lament the fact that social platforms are evolving so quickly that researchers cannot first study them and observe their effects on the brains of children and adolescents. However, with regard to this specific study, some issues can be raised such as the fact that the information was self-reported by the adolescents and therefore, may not be reliable and inferior to reality.

Kira Riehm, a doctoral student at Johns-Hopkins Institution and lead author of the study, says the average of three hours per day should be taken as a guide. She declared : “Future studies could track, in real time, the time spent on social media, which would provide more precision in estimating a kind of threshold. ”
