1/2 Teaspoon vanillaBeat egg whites until foamy with cream of tartar added.. Gradually add sugar, 1 Tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff peaks form and sugar dissolves. (2 to 4 minutes.) Add vanilla, beating well. Spread on hot pie filling sealing at edge of pastry. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 to 28 minutes.
Instructions
Step 1
Combine first 4 ingredients in a large heavy saucepan. Set sugar mixture aside. Combine egg yolks and milk. Stir into sugar mixture.
Step 2
Add butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Remove from heat.
Step 3
Stir in vanilla. Spoon into pastry shell. Spread meringue over hot filling, sealing to edge of pastry. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 to 28 minutes.
